Our work
The Welcoming is a charity dedicated to supporting New Scots (refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants) to feel at home in Edinburgh. We support New Scots to learn English, find jobs and access local services, offering opportunities for friendship, sustainable living, creativity, and health and wellbeing.
The challenges
The crisis in Afghanistan means we are supporting many Afghan families who have recently arrived in Scotland for safety. The deaths of 27 refugees in the English channel in November has affected many of us, particularly our new members for whom the tragedy strikes close to home. We need your help to continue supporting their wellbeing and their journey as they begin their new lives in Edinburgh.
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause challenges for New Scots. Many of those we support live in areas of multiple deprivation in Edinburgh and are facing economic and social difficulties due to the pandemic, including job insecurity and isolation. Your donation will help us to support New Scots to learn English, make friends and secure employment, giving them the best tools in the face of the pandemic.
The winter leaves many New Scots unprepared. Those we support often arrive in Scotland unprepared for the winter months, including insufficient winter clothing and facing high heating bills. We recently held a Swap Shop where New Scots were able to collect clothing for free. We also regularly support New Scots to reduce their energy bills and as a result keep their heat on during the winter months. We are asking for your donation so that we can continue providing our support to New Scots during the winter period and beyond.
