This summer, we are happy to announce the relaunch of Getting Ready for Opportunities and Work (GROW), a free course designed to equip New Scots parents with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate work in the UK.

Understanding the unique challenges New Scots face, GROW offers the opportunity to learn about Scottish work culture and UK Rights and Responsibilities in the workplace. It also looks at the practical side, such as creating CVs, interviewing skills, and finding work in Scotland.

We are running GROW at the Salisbury Centre (starting on August 20th) to further our reach across different local communities. But, as we reopen the doors to this course, we are reminded of its incredible impact on families in Edinburgh.

The course is fabulous, the topic every week, the facilitator, and the support is very helpful for us who are finding work in Scotland. I hope there are more chance for another people so they can join this course. The course is fabulous, the topic every week, the facilitator, and the support is very helpful for us who are finding work in Scotland. A Filmmaker’s Journey

Embarking on a life somewhere new is no easy feat, especially for those hoping to enter the competitive arts industry. One such story of determination comes from a documentary filmmaker who provides insight into entering Scotland’s vibrant arts scene.

For our participant, the initial hurdle was continuing a filmmaking career in a new country. While they are currently studying for a Master’s degree in Film Directing, they felt that pursuing a career in Scotland was too high an obstacle to overcome.

A lack of confidence and minimal support from their university naturally led to a sense of overwhelm. Additionally, there was the concern that the themes of their documentary work might be met with resistance.

Week by week, alongside New Scots parents in Edinburgh, they were guided through the nuances of living and working in Scotland, ensuring a gradual but steady build-up of confidence. They discovered that Scotland is rich in opportunities for artists and a welcoming nation that supports the integration of new talent.

After completing the course, they continued engaging with our one-to-one employability service to work on their CVs and look at the opportunities available to budding filmmakers. With a lot of hard work, they were awarded a £1,000 grant and an opportunity to screen their documentary as part of a nationwide festival!

This story highlights the potential for success when people are given the right tools and encouragement to pursue their dreams.

GROW is ultimately about building confidence. The course provides a supportive learning environment and starts a personal journey towards a new life in Scotland. Whether that person’s goal is to re-enter the workforce, start volunteering, or explore different pathways like further education – we can help start that process in a positive way.

“I like the GROW COURSE. I am now confident to finding a job in Scotland. Thank you GROW.”
