Volunteer ESOL Teachers for New Scots

Are you passionate about language and committed to making a positive impact? The Welcoming is looking for volunteer ESOL teachers to lead weekly English classes for New Scots (refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants) in Edinburgh.

Who we’re looking for:

We need dedicated volunteers to support New Scots in developing essential English skills, helping them build confidence and integrate into life in Scotland.

We are looking for four teachers to cover both the beginner’s class on Tuesday mornings and the online beginner’s class on Wednesday mornings.

Teacher schedule

📅 Tuesday: Beginners Class

⏰ 10 am to 12 pm
📍 In-person

📅 Wednesday: Online Beginners Class

⏰ 11 am – 12.30 pm
📍Online

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging English lessons.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Help learners develop practical language skills for daily life.
  • Encourage confidence and participation.

Requirements:

✔️ Strong English language skills.
✔️ Patient and understanding, with a good sense of humour.
✔️ Supportive and encouraging attitude.

✔️Accustomed to working in an online classroom environment.

Volunteer role descriptions

ESOL Tutors

Role purpose

Provide ESOL support in order to improve practical English language skills of migrants and newcomers to Edinburgh. Plan and teach an online class (beginner, elementary or intermediate), either on your own or as part of a team.

Skills and qualities needed
  • Very strong English language skills, Teaching UK recognised qualification (e.g. CELTA, CertTESOL etc.). Experience in ELT and/or adult learning. Ability to plan lessons and work as part of team.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. Patient, understanding with a good sense of humour.
Commitment

The post averages out at 2-4 hours per week, but it depends on preparation time and and can be negotiated.
