On October 1st, we had the privilege of gathering with an extraordinary group of people to celebrate something truly special—the dedication of our volunteers. These individuals have given their time, energy, and hearts to support New Scots in Edinburgh, making a lasting impact on the lives of those seeking a fresh start. Over the past financial year, 94 volunteers contributed an incredible 2,727 hours to The Welcoming, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment.
A Night to Remember
Our volunteer appreciation event was a heartwarming occasion, bringing together those who support a variety of programmess across The Welcoming. From ESOL teachers and befrienders to those involved in our Conversation Café, Community Fridge, Community Garden, and other friendship-building activities, the evening celebrated the people who keep these initiatives flourishing.
There was an undeniable sense of camaraderie and joy in the room as our volunteers shared their experiences and connected with one another. We also had the chance to reflect on the true impact of their efforts. As Tesfu Gessesse, our CEO, remarked during the event, “When you connect with New Scots, they feel that they are not alone, and they see that there are Scottish local people who care about them. When you visit their house as a befriender, their neighbours will no longer see them as strangers or enemies”, recognising that the efforts of our volunteers have made a real difference in how New Scots are perceived in the community.
The Power of Volunteering
It’s this profound sense of connection that lies at the heart of our work at The Welcoming. Whether helping someone improve their English, offering companionship through befriending, or simply sharing a conversation over coffee, every act of kindness plays a part in breaking down barriers and creating an atmosphere of inclusion. Our volunteers are helping individuals and building bridges between communities, reshaping how New Scots are seen and welcomed in Edinburgh.
